Interview With HiHello – The App That Revolutionalized The Way You Handle Business Cards

This week, we’ve had a really insightful interview with Dr.Manu Kumar, the founder of HiHello – The app that helps you stand out among your colleagues through its elegant selection of digital business cards. Behind every successful venture, there is a story to be told. Here we uncover the ‘behind the scenes’ from how the idea came to fruition to how they’ve managed to scale it to great heights.

1. HiHello is an incredible business card scanner and complete manager App. How did you come up with the idea?

I founded CardMunch in 2009 to solve the problem of paper business cards piling up on my desk. CardMunch was a service that converted paper cards into accurate digital contacts using human verification. (At its peak CardMunch was seeing around 50,000 card scans per day, so we knew we were onto something!) In 2011 LinkedIn acquired CardMunch, and then quietly killed it off. However, my problem of still collecting paper business cards still hadn’t been solved. So in 2018, I decided to take a second pass at solving this problem. This time instead of converting paper business cards to digital contacts we tried to envision a way in which we could move directly to digital business cards. We launched with the ability to create multiple digital business cards that could be easily shared with anyone, even if they don’t have the app. From there we’ve expanded into an end-to-end contact manager—soon we’ll be releasing our Self Healing Address book, which is an address book that updates itself with your contacts’ latest information. This is just the beginning, we have exciting things in store for the future!

2. How many users do you have right now? How long did it take to get to this stage?

We’ve been incrementally adding new features to HiHello over the past year and a half, and right now over 40,000 people are using HiHello. 

3. How are you running your marketing efforts so far?

Most of our marketing is done through word of mouth. It’s the nature of the product—when people share their digital business cards, other people naturally hear about it. 

4. What is the ultimate vision with HiHello?

We firmly believe that connecting with the right person at the right time can be life-changing. Our vision for HiHello is to create a platform that helps people grow and nurture their network, and in turn, empower them to form mutually beneficial relationships. 

5. Have you raised funding for the project? If yes, where does the majority of the capital go?

Yes, we have raised a seed round of financing. At this time, the majority of the capital is going to R&D efforts. You can read more about our seed financing in our blog.
